Abstract

As the areas for exploiting natural resources from the forest decrease and the demand for industrial raw material increases the role of plantations for various end uses will become more important. Malaysia is endowed with a great diversity of plant species many of which have great potential for different kinds of end use. It is the diversity that will provide the species for forest plantations in Malaysia. This paper attempts to give an overview of the potential of using indigenous species for forest plantations. The end use objectives of plantations should be stressed when considering the species to be planted. The importance of a more diverse plantation and factors pertaining to the success and advantages of using indigenous species are highlighted.
