Abstract

Laboratory and field studies were conducted to determine the acute toxicity of eleven herbicides to common rice field fish in Malaysia. Laboratory studies indicated that herbicides bensulfuron 2 4-d metsulfuron and quiclorac have low toxicity LC50 more than 10ppm sepat siam Trichogaster pectoralis and/or keli Calarias batrachus while butachlor molinate oxadiazon pretilachlor propanil and thiobencard are moderately LC500.5-10ppm but fenoxaprop is highly toxic LC50less than 0.5ppm. However field studies showed bensulfuron 2 4-D fenoxaprop oxadiazon and propanil at double the effective rates for weed control were safe to the fish
