Othman Muhamad, . (1992) Some results of transporting prawn fry. [Proceedings Paper]

Abstract

The so-called plastic bag method is a very practical way of transporting live fish/prawn fry. This simple method however occasionally gives rise to high mortalities due to various reasons. Several important interrelated factors such as loading density water quality deterioration handling and transportation time greatly affect the survival of the animals during transport. Ten consignments of 10 days old udang galah juveniles were transported from The National Prawn Fry Production and Research Centre at Kampung Pulau Sayak Kedah to the Freshwater Fish Research Center at Batu Berendam Melaka using an insulated truck. The average transport time was 15 hours. Different loading densities ranging from 1 000 to 2 500 juveniles per bag were used. Survival rate water quality and fry conditions were checked and found to vary on reaching the destination
