Abstract

Rattan resources are depleting at a very fast rate. Since diseases in the field appear to be one of the factors affecting their regeneration and growth rattans were surveyed in the natural stands plantations and nurseries for the occurrence of diseases. Similarly biodegradation of extracted rattans is a major constraint of rattan based industries. As no information was available an industrial survey was carried out in the rattan based units to investigate the fungal staining and biodegradation of rattans. The survey revealed that rattans are susceptible to a large number of fungal pathogens which caused diseases in nurseries plantations and natural stands. Some of the important pathogens affecting the nursery seedlings were Guignardia calami Corynespora cassicola Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Fusarium longipes and F. moniliforme. In plantations and natural stands pathogens like C. gloeosporioides C. crassipes Sphaerodothis sp. Alternaria alternata Phyllachora calamigena Phomopsis sp. Pestalotiopsis theae etc. caused severe foliar infections. Dwindling rattan resources of the State apparently have led the rattan based units to depend upon the availability of rattans from northeastern States of India. Generally these rattans have been found heavily stained and deteriorated by fungal organisms resulting in an average loss of 10-40percent. Staining in rattan was caused by Botryodiplodia theobromae Ceratocystis spp. Graphium sp. etc. Besides a large number of molds like Aspergillus Penicillium Trichoderma Trichurus Chaetomium etc. were also found associated with the rattans stored in humid conditions while decay fungi such as Schizophyllum commune Coriolus and Merulius were encountered on rattans stored in damp areas
