Agroecological pest management in chickpea and pigeonpea crops in India

Abstract

The pod borer Helicoverpa armigera Hubner on Chickpea Cicer arietinum Linn. and Pigeonpea Cajanus cajan Linn. Millsp.; the flower and pod webber Maruca testulalis Geyer and argomyzid podfly Melanagromyza obtusa malloch on Pigeonpea; amongst the insect pests are the major biotic constraints that limit the production of these crops by millions of mostly resource poor farmers in the Semid-Arid Tropical and Sub-Tropical parts of Asia Africa and Latin America. Pest pressures vary in different agroecological regions of India due to differences in genotype-environment interactions. The damage-yield relationships and economic thresholds which also vary in different regions need further study. Precise pest management strategies in sole and intercrop system suited to local pest pressures and damage-yield relationships are still in the formative phase. These are discussed so that combinations of cultural practices and limited host-plant resistance would ensure continued build up of natural control agents and need based insecticide use. Continued survey and monitoring of the dynamics of on-farm pest pressures in well defined agroecological regions within the geographic limits of crop production is suggested to build data based information system. This will permit precise estimates of economic injury levels and the study of correlations between pest pressures and the components of abiotic environment for use in forecasting pest damages
