Abstract

The economic importance of the genus Coptotermes in Malaysian agriculture and forestry is reviewed in relation to current development - emphasis being on forestry. Their pest status and aspects of their biology and ecology are discussed. The genus Coptotermes has a pan-tropical distribution with many species known to be economically important pests. However the taxonomic status of species in the genus needs revision. In Peninsular Malaysia Coptotermes curvignathus C. kalshoveni C. travians and C. sepangensis have been recorded as pests of timber in housing. Aspects of termite damage to wood in houses and their control are discussed. Coptotermes curvignathus is the primary pest termite of agricultural and forestry tree crops. The economic impact of termite damage as well as methods and cost of control are discussed in relation to the current developments in forest plantations. The management of termite damage to tree crops is considered an important input for successful forest management practices in the country
