Abstract
Genetic markers are of great value in practical plant breeding programme and genetic research. Conventionally genetic markers between individuals are based on morphological differences. Subsequently isoenzymes and other biochemical markers have been used. Markers based on DNA probes have taken over as being a predominant tool in the development of genetic maps mapping of agronomically and physiologically important characters and the determination of genetic variability in plant populations. More recently the use of RAPD markers have been shown to be potentially useful in many areas of genetic research genetic mapping and in the determination of genetic variation in plants. This paper presents the use of RAPD in the detection of genetic variation in the oil palm
