Abstract

The effect of nitrogen on albumins globulins prolamins gluttelins and total protein content was studied in six mungbean varieties grown at six nitrogen levels in a split-plot experiment. The application of nitrogen fertilizers at 25 kg/ha was found to be beneficial in increasing the albumins and total protein content but this increase was not sustained at high levels of nitrogen fertilization. Of the four protein fractions prolamins were the most affected with a decrease of almost 65 percent at the highest nitrogen level of 125 kg/ha. Significant differences among mungbean varieties were detected for the four protein fractions and total protein content. Albumins and globulins were found to make up almost 95 percent of the total seed protein in mungbean. Grain yield 100 seed-weight and plant height were increased significantly by nitrogen fertilizers at the rate of 50 kg/ha.
