Abstract

Golden Hope Plantations Berhad has started planting herbs in 1998 at the Oil Palm Research Station at Banting. About 200 species were acquired from Government research institutes including FRIM and MARDI as well as private nurseries. The Company has realised the need to diversify its business from the traditional planting of commodity crops such as oil palm rubber and cocoa to herbs where there is greater future potential. We have identified at this early stage several species of interest which cover three categories that is medicinal 'tongkat Ali' 'kacip Fatimah' 'hempedu bumi' and 'mengkudu' essential oil tee tree 'nilam' 'serai wangi' and 'kesum' and culinary'kunyit' 'halia' 'cengkih' 'buah pala' and 'kayu manis'. Commercial planting of 'mengkudu' on Carey Island was initiated recently and also new areas are cleared for the planting of tea tree. Of late the Company has embarked on the development of herbs and spice business for local and overseas markets. This way we believe that the business can be realised in a shorter period.
