Agroforestry practices in Sandakan Sabah Malaysia

Abstract

Agroforestry has been emphasized in the Third National Agricultural Policy NAP3 and in the Second Sabah Agricultural Policy SAP2 and an important land use system both at the national and state level. Besides smallholders are one of the potential users of groforestry. However scientific data on smallholders' agroforestry practices in Sabah is still lacking. This study was carried out to investigate agroforestry practices in smallholders' farm in Sandakan Sabah. The study focuses on smallholders' involvement in agroforestry practices their components homegarden activities and marketing of their agroforestry products between some ethnic groups. Data were collected through questionnaire survey by in-person surveys. There were 24 villages around Sandakan involved in this study. The study showed that 91.4 of smallholders were practising agroforestry. However 77.6 of them did not understand about agroforestry. There were six types of a groforestry systems found in their farms. The systems were agrosilvicultural agrisilvicultural agrosilvopastoral aqua-agrosilvicultural silvopastoral and aqua-agrisilvicultural. There was no significant difference between homegarden activities amongst the ethnic groups studied. The components of smallholders' agroforestry systems were main crops supplementary crops timber species animals and fish ponds. The marketing channels of smallholders' agroforestry products other than FFB from oil palm were unorganized and limited.
