Abstract

Vitex negundo L. or locally known as 'legundi' is from the family Verbenaceae. The leaf of this plant was traditionally used tO treat asthma fever headaches as well as arthritis. Extracts of leaf and stem of this species were evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity using tetradecanoylphorbol acetate TPA-induced mouse ear oedema. This technique is frequently used to assess the topical anti-oedematous effect of natural products. It was found that the crude methanolic extract of leaf and stem of Vitex negundo showed an inhibition of 74 and 34 respectively. Using the solvent partitioning method the methanolic extract of this plant stem was fractionated into hexane ethyl acetate and methanol fractions. among these fractions hexane and ethyl acetate showed the highest inhibition.
