Abstract

Acid sulfate soils with pH of less that 3.5 are widespread in Malaysia. Some of these soils are planted to cocoa but the yield is reported to be low due to soil infertility related to A1 toxicity. Cocoa growth is sensitive to soil acidity. A review of literature reveals that A1 in soils can to a certain extent be reduced by organic matter application. A study was conducted to determine the efficacy of organic material to ameliorate acid sulfate soil infertility of growing cocoa seedlings. The results showed that the growth of cocoa seedlings was affected by A1 toxicity. The relative top dry weight of the cocoa seedlings was negatively correlated with A13 activity. The critical A13 activity was 10 muM.
