Abstract

Fingerprints can be used to identify clones and calculated genetic similarities can be used to select clones for breeding and interplanting. Cocoa clones were molecularly fingerprints to determine the genetic relationships of those clones for breeding and interplanting. DNA has been extracted from 265 clones at the MCB research station in Hilir Perak Peninsular Malaysia and is being used to creat AFLP molecular markers. The sets of band sizes for each clone are compared to one another using a computer program and a scatter plot constructed to reveal genetic distances among the clones. Breeders will be able to create higher yielding trees that may be more disease and insect resistant through hybrid vigour planters will have increased yield and trees with larger beans.
