Abstract

Antioxidative activity is the ability of compounds to inhibit or delay the oxidation process. In this study antioxidative activity of extracts from leaves roots and petioles of four varieties of Centella asiatica L. Urb. V 01 V 02 V 03 and V 04 were investigated. The antioxidative activity was measured using the ferric thiocyanate method FTC thiobarbituric acid test TBA and compared to ¡-tocopherol natural antioxidant and butylated hydroxytoulene or BHT synthetic antioxidant. The results revealed that V 03 possessed the highest antioxidative activity among the varieties tested. Results also showed that the leaves and roots of C. asiatica exhibited high antioxidative activity comparable to that of ¡-tocopherol and BHT. The leaf extract of V 03 showed the highest activity among the samples tested. A similar trend of antioxidative activity was observed using the TBA method.
