The effect of acetylation and deposition of polymers on the dimensional stability of oil palm trunk

Abstract

Oil palm trunk material was treated with acetic anhydride and various combinations of methyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate monomers and then polimerised in-situ. The material treated with acetic anhydride gave varying weight gains depending on the curing time. Treatment with monomers and combinations of monomers gave varying wood polymer gains depending on the initial density of oil palm trunk. Both processes increased the dimensional stability of the treated material. However the increment in dimensional stability per weight gain was better in the acetylation process. The improvements in dimensional imparted by all treatments are discussed.
