Safety and health performance of edible oil factory workers in Bintulu

Abstract

The research was conducted to determine the safety and health performance of edible oil factory workers in Bintulu. Questionnaire forms were distributed randomly to workers in the factory site. Respondents of this research consisted of 75 male and 25 female mostly unmarried young workers at the age around 20 and 35 year old and with secondary school background. A number of diseases were frequently reported namely eye pain skin problem breathing problem headache backache muscle pain joint pain neck pain ear pain sour throat leg pain and hand pain. Thirty percent of the respondents have some experience with accidents. With regard to the personal protective equipment PPE almost half of the respondents were not used to wearing safety visor safety musk and ear muffs but were familiar with safety boot safety helmet and gloves. An association between the gender variable and performance of safety and health were observed. Meanwhile other variables such as age marital status and education background did not show association with safety and health performance.
