Abstract
Residual soils are products of in-situ weathering of igneous sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. They occur in most countries in the world but the greater areas and depths are normally found in tropical humid areas such as Malaysia. The parameter of chemical composition for soil is of small interest for civil engineering field but the presence of certain constituents affects the behaviour of soils. For example extreme values of acidity or alkalinity sulphates and chloride can cause damage or hazard to concrete buried in the ground. This paper discusses on the chemical compositions and properties of residual soils of granite based taken at various depths at several locations around southern and eastern region of Peninsular Malaysia. X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry XRF pH meter and DR4000 Spectrophotometer are used to determine the chemical compositions or parameters of the residual soils. From the XRF analysis it shows that the percentages of aluminium and ferum trioxides. The pH value is in the range between 4.69 to 5.92 which shoes that the residual soil is acidic. The loss On Ignition LOI values for residual soils taken from southern and eastern region are 5.57-17.0 and 8.36-5.42 respectively.
