Occurrence and virulence gene of non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli from goats in Selangor Malaysia

Abstract

A number of non-0157 Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli non-0157 STEC are reported to be as virulent as 0157 STEC and are able to cause mild to severe human illness. Farm animals especially cattle sheep and goats are major reservoirs of zoonotic non-O 157 STEC strains. Recto-anal mucosal swab RAMS samples from 87 goats around Selangor area were examined by cultural isolation 'O' serotyping of selected serogroups Shiga toxin Stx detection and multiplex PCR. Seven 8 goats were positive for serotypes 08 26 0103 and 0128 and Six was detected in four isolates 57. Multiplex PCR results showed he isolates were positive for Shiga toxin I Six. A combination of more than one virulence genes was found in one isolate. The occurrence of non-0157 STEC in goats especially strains with multi-virulent genes poses a potential threat to human health.
