Abstract

In the decades to come agriculture will continue to play an important role in the Malaysian economy. However the agricultural sector has to be able to compete as a modern and commercial sector becoming the main source of raw materials for the manufacturing sector. It has to provide the basis for the expansion and growth of agro-based production. Taking into cognizance the labour shortage in the country the agricultural sector has to become increasingly mechanised taking advantage of modern technology. Adequate water resource management is an important prerequisite for the sustained growth of the agriculture sector. In this the environmental and social effects of any water resource development has to be considered. Research and development is important in ensuring the availability of drainage systems which are not only cost effective and environmental-friendly but also socially acceptable to the users. Government support in terms of the provision of infrastructure to enable the development of large-scale and competitive agriculture sector must be accepted. In this the role of the private sector especially the plantation sector for both food and non-food crops cannot be overlooked.
