Abstract
The Malaysian rain forests hold incalculable value as untapped bioresources of germplasm for the development of herbal biomolecules. An integrated approach of phytomedicine RandD programmes will allow us to develop these bioresources into high quality herbal and other botanical products. In order to meet the international herbal product standards and compete succesfully in the international markets it is essential that the local manufacturers adopt modern concepts and technologies in processing and developing their herbal products. Systematic cultivation of quality medicinal plant materials techniques to authenticate the quality of raw materials and standard chemical marker profile of plant materials and end products must be established. The development of future herbal products must also emphasise the efficacy simplicity of use and safety of products. In view of embarking on a competitive and succesful Malaysian herbal industry of the 21st century a centre of excellence in herbal medicine must be established with the goals of exploring opportunities to producing modern herbal medicine and establishing the foundation for drug discovery.
