Abstract

A laboratory study was carried out to screen some medicinal plants which according to literatures were considered to contain a bactericidal substances. Those plants were Punica granatum Euphorbia antiquorum Euphorbia hirta Allium sp Anacardium occidentale Linn Polycias quilfoylei. The antibacterical activity was tested by the dish methode of the Kirby-Bauer with some modifications and the dilution method to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration MIC.This antibacterial activity was tested againts Escherichia coli Pseudomonas aeruginosa Staphylococcus aureus Salmonella typhosa Shigella flexnerri Shigella dysentriae 1 Shigella sonnei Bacillus subtilis Bacillus cereus Candida albicans Trichophyton rubrum T. mentagrophytes and Microsporum gypsium. The result showed that ethanol extract of P. granatum inhibited the growth of Sta. aureus S. flexnerri Ps. aeruginosa Shigella sonnei E. coli S. typhosa while Euphorbia antiquorum inhibited Ps. aeruginosa Sta. aureus and T. rubrum. Water extract of E. hirta herbsA. occidentale leaves and cashew appleE. anatiquorum latexPolycias quilfoylei leavesand Allium adorum and Allium shoenoprasum herbsinhibited the growth of Sta. aureus E. coli Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus cereus. The petroleum ether extract of A. occidentale nut-shell inhibited the growth of Sta. aureus E.coli and Ps. aeruginosa. The water extract of E. hirta inhibited the growth of C. albicans T. mentagrophytes and M. gypsiumwhile E. antiquorum inhibited the growth of T. rubrum but not C. albicans.
