Abstract
The ability of selected plant materials to absorb and retain added fragrance oil or be transformed was evaluated. Whith and black gum benzoin and frankincense powder and corncob ginger and galangal powder and granules were treated with fragrance rose oil and allowed to absorb by accasional shaking during storage for 14 days. Orrisroot powder was used as the control. Corncob granules were not significantly different from orrisroot powder in retaining the best fragrance. Corncob powder galangal powder and granules and white gum benzoin blended with the rose oil to give a totally different fragrance. However the powder form of benzoin tended to cake out upon treatment with the oil thus making it unsuitable as a fixative. Upon selection based on their fragrance retention ability four of the oiled fixatives corncob and galangal powder and granules and 'keladi minyak' granules were each added to a botanical mix of dried rose flowers and rain tree leaves. The fragrance of the potpourri was evaluated weekly beginning 30 days after blending. Potpourri containing orrisroot powder retained the best fragrance followed by potpourri containing corncob granules and powder and galangal granules. The use of fixatives in powder form gave the potpourri a cloudy appearance. Colour of rose petals in the potpourri changed from red to bluish red while rain tree leaves turned from yellowish green to yellowish light green in 58 days. Corncob powder and granules and galangal granules showed good potential as fixatives for potpourri in place of the more expensive and difficult to obtain orrisroot.
