Abstract
Since the beginning of the 1990s life cycle assessment LCA has been used in a variety of applications in both public and private sectors throughout the world. Although the use of LCA has generated the global awareness that a 'life-cycle' concept is critical to any evaluation of the energy economic and environmental dimensions of a problem the use of LCA in Malaysia is still at its infancy. Increasing the awareness of stakeholders to the potential of LCA to support private and public sector environmental decision-making is of prime importance in light of the developments in international trade arena. This paper introduces the basics of LCA and the corresponding ISO 14040 series of standards that have been developed by the International Organization for Standardization. Examples of private and public sector uses of LCA in other countries are highlighted.
