Abstract

Global warming represents one of the greatest challenges today for government and organisations. The international response to global climate change started with the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change UNFCCC. The Kyoto Protocol signed by 159 countries in 1997 commits the industrialised countries to reduce their collective green house gases GHG emissions by 5 compared with the 1990 level by the period 2008 - 2012. The Kyoto Protocol introduces three mechanisms to support real long term measurable and cost effective GHG reductions and they are joint implementation JI by developed and developing countries working together to earn emission reduction units ERUs clean development mechanism CDM where Annex I countries implement emessions reduction projects in non - Annex I countries to earn certified emission reduction CERs unitsand Emissions Trading where Annex 1 countries with excess of emission units to sell to other Annex I countries. ISO/TC 207 has responded by providing the whole range of 23 standards for quantifying auditing verifying and certifying the GHG emission reduction through these mechanisms. Success of this initiative will depend on the adoption on the Kyoto Protocol. Based on the use of the Protocol it is possible to look at the carbon sequestration in oil palm plantations over the life cycle of the palms in emission reduction and use the accumulated carbon for potential GHG trading.
