Abstract
The development of ISO 14000 Series of Standards on environmental management in the early 1990s is a response to a global concern over environmental pollution problems as a result of inefficient use of material and energy by industries. Since then various international standards on environmental management have been published which provide guidelines to industries on implementing an environmental management systems EMS with the aim to comply with relevant environmental regulations through pollution prevention measures. The standards also serve as a management tools to assist industries in managing the environmental aspects of their activities products and services that have potential environmental impact. The paper provides an overview of the ISO 14000 Environmental Management Systems EMS Family of Standards highlights the current status of ISO 14000 in Malaysia including benefits gained and issues faced by the Malasian companies in EMS implementation and discusses the possible integration of EMS with other 14000 Family of Standards.
