Abstract

The most common species is the only species which grows on poor soil and imperata grassland. It is the main species for the industrial tree plantation program aiming to plant 6.5 million ha over 5 years focussing on grassland areas. This started in 1982 in a concession area of 16 000 ha in N. Sumatra. In Kalimantan the industrial tree planting program uses 10 species but mainly A mangium. Future problems may be pests and diseases but in imperata grassland the most serious problem is fire as A. mangium is not resistant to fire. In Kalimantan A mangium was compared to Gmelina arborea. A. mangium can reduce imperata but Gmelina does not suppress it well. Under A. mangium after imperata is suppresses Eupatorium odoratum colonizes the area which in the dry season makes the area susceptible to fire which A. mangium does not survive. There is no E. odoratum under Gmelina arborea. Direct seeding of Acacia has been tried for A. mangium and A. auriculiformis on burnt grassland ploughed soil and a control of grass. Germination was only 3 on bare soil and 10 on burnt grassland and grass but it has some potential.
