Abstract
Malaysian has some 650 000 ha of fringing coastline mangrove forest of which 110 000 ha in Peninsular Malaysia 366 000 ha in Sabah and 174 000 ha in Sarawak. Categorically mangroves have been traditionally exploited for fuel woods construction materials and charcoal production. The exploitation of the mangrove forest and its waterways for the establishment of shrimp and fish culture projects has also been markedly increased. In addition to its common domestic and aquacultural usage it serves as the spawning nursery and feeding grounds for many commercially important fish and invertebrate species. To date the mangrove has also been identified as another avenue for supporting the development of coastal tourism and other related recreational fisheries activities. The acreage of mangrove forest have also been linked with the tonnage of fisheries landings. The conflicts on the resource exploitation and its related problem have prompted more efficient establishment on management procedures. This paper will attempt to discuss the present status of mangroves with specfic reference to its role in capture fisheries aquaculture recreational and other fisheries development activities.
