Abstract

By the early years of the twenty first century although the resource and its management will continue to baffle scientists politicians and administrators the technological information revolution will allow satellite transponders and cameras to monitor operations of each and every fishing vessel from central facilitites and hence the introduction of individual fish to be retained largely eliminating by-catch and juvenile destruction. Submarines may be used for under-ice fishing and to select and transport fish from hi-tech impoundments. Range management using artificial reef systems will multiply in coastal areas and new species fished in deeper waters where new technologies will be applied. Wetlands and nursery areas lost to development and pollution will be replaced by artificial breeding and growing habitats. Advance in information and control technology will lead to the first robot fishing vessels operated from safety of a mother ship. Ghost fishing will be reduced by introduction of water degradable lines nets and ropes. Fishermen will be brought fully into all decision making to ensure realistic and practical solutions emerge.
