Abstract
Malaysian fishing industry started with capture fishery which supplies relatively cheaper animal protein. Progress in fishing gears and vessels have subsequently reduce the amount of inshore landings. Thus the industry moves offshore while aquaculture and mariculture compliment the production. There are currently more than 90 000 licensed fishermen actively involved in either in-or offshore fishing. Over exploitation of inshore fish species is among the problems encountered by inshore fishing industry while diseases and inconsistent seed supply plaque the aquaculture and mariculture industries. Integrating the fishing communities in other income-generating activity such as ecotourism is proposed. Activities such as making and selling handicrafts and chartering fishing vessels for recreational fishing could further generate additional income for fishermen and their families.
