Abstract

Methods have been developed during the last three decades to study the genetic structure and adaptions of fish populations. This is very pronounced in salmonid species where homing and its associated reproductive isolation have resulted in adaption to distinctive environmental settings. Straying or the complement to homing tends to maintain the stability of a species in a geographic area. Sustainable fish production or even increases in yields can best be achieved by maintaining the genetic diversity found in local stocks. Fish from hatcheries or enhancement programmes straying into wild populations will as a rule reduce fitness of local populations through displacement of locally adapted genes or coadapted gene complexes. Such an introgression can only be detected by genetic monitoring. The genetic policy of the State of Alaska is based on the principle that long-term productivity is achieved by maintaining the genetic integrity of wild stocks. Their diversity buffers against disasters natural or man-made ones.
