Abstract

The sediment in the study area consists mostly of fine to coarse particles. The major portion of the sediment is negatively skewed. The estuary area is under the influence of transportational and erosive forces. The lack of silt and clay in the estuary is attributable to fewer depositional factors under the influence of a strong current as compared to the lagoon area. The current speed during the northeastern monsoon may reach up to 100 cm/s and make cage culture impossible during this time. The beach sediment ranges from coarse to fine sand. Generally the mean grain size decreases towards the northwestern sector. The skewness value of the beach sand area is mostly negative indicating that the study area is under the influence of a strong wave and current action.
