Abstract
Lipids and a variety of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids have been isolated from Ulva sp. Caulerpa sp. Codium sp. and unidentified Graciales by gas chromatography-mass spectometry. These seaweeds were collected from the coasts of Peninsular Malaysia. Saturated fatty acids were found in much greater quantity greater than 85 of total fatty acids than unsaturated ones comprising the monoethylenic and polythylenic types. Palmitic acid was the major component greater than 75 in all the seaweeds analysed. Oleic acid was the most commonly occuring unsaturated acid less than 60 while linolenic was the only polyunsaturated fatty acid present. Members of the Graciales differ from the others in their fatty acid contents.
