Abstract
Buoyant plumes are produced by releasing an idealised volume discharge into a rotating fluid. River discharge Coriolis and tidal crossflow are the external forcings applied upon the system. The fate of the discharging fresh water as it enters the more dense receiving waters can be regarded as occuring in two stages namely i an active phase and ii a spreading phase. During the active phase defined by the interval TQ of the discharge the offshore penetration y0 of the buoyant plume increases until a quasi-steady value. At the end of the prescribed discharge duration further offshore penetration ceases. The volume Q0 TQ of discharge fluid then begin to spread horizontally under gravity by virtue of its lower density as a boundary current ud with the coast on its right. The developed model experiments have been tested and showed reasonable agreement with published field data.
