Abstract

The Sungai Juru estuary Penang has been one of the most polluted rivers in Malaysia since the mid 1970s. Extensive aquaculture of blood cockles Anadara granosa and other commercially valuable shellfish at the river mouth has flourished into a multimillion ringgit industry despite the state of the environment. This has led the government of the state of Penang to include the river for a multimillion ringgit river rehabilitation project under the Eighth Malaysia Plan. This study however serves as an independent initiative to help plan further management and rehabilitation strategies. Sungai Juru originates from Sungai Rambai in Bukit Mertajam and flows into the Southern Channel through about 2 km of mudflats where the aquaculture activities are carried out. The river has been dammed with a tidal gate at about 8 km from the river mouth at the Tun Abdul Razak Bridge preventing water from flowing further upstream during the high tide. Hydrological data from literature for the river were collected and through the use of computer models attempts were made to describe the dynamics of tides and its influence towards the distribution of pollutants. Concentrations of water quality parameters namely suspended solids were then used to model the distribution of the pollutants in the river. The results from the hydrodynamic model and the water quality model will be presented and discussed.
