Goh K.M., . (1996) Soil science and its future role in the tropics. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
Soil have a profound influence on civilisation and the human society. In the past soil science has contributed considerably to the agricultural and economic development of many tropical countries. In the future are there any more challenges and opportunities left for the next generation of soil scientists in the tropics Currently several issues are confronting governmental agencies the puclic and the users of the land in the tropics. Among the key issues are the need to increase food production the need to develop and implement sustainable farming systems in order to arrest if not reverse land degradation the need to conserve and protect valuable native forests and land resources and the need to reduce environmental pollution. Many of these issues require solutions and inputs of future soil scientists in the tropics. Implications of these and related issues in relation to the future role of soil science in the tropics will be discussed.
