Abstract

Peninsular Malaysia began a massive plantation programme in 1982 to avert the anticipated wood deficit for domestic consumption. Acacia mangium is the dominant tree species planted for this purpose. As phosphorus is the main element limiting tree growth in the tropics a phosphorus trial was conducted on two sites with three and five-year old A. mangium stands. The experimental design was a randomised complete block design RCBD with six treatments and five replicates. The treatments were : 0 control 150 300 450 600 and 750 kg P2O5/ha. The results showed that height and Dbh were enhanced significantly even after 1.5 years of fertilization with the highest level of P. The implication of the results is that a further research trial with more than 750 kg P2O5/ha should be initiated to determine optimum P requirements in A. mangium plantation.
