Abstract

For the country to achieve sustainable economic development there has to be sustainable energy consumption. Indeed the government has recently announced the plan to incorporate energy efficiency and renewable energy into the countrys four-fuel diversification policy of oil has hydro and coal. Energy efficiency and renewable energy are viewed as the least cost energy resources when both environment cost and welfare needs are taken into account. Currently the county overall energy intensity of economy stands at 18 MJ per US Dollar of GDP which is much higher than that of 6 MJ in Japan and 13 MJ in the United Kingdom. All these indicate good potential for the country to improve its energy utilization which is important to remain competitive in an increasingly globalize economy. The country has also vast potential to exploits its ample renewable energyresources i.e. solar and biomass. Solar energy is particularly attractive for accelerated development as it coincides with the grid-electricity peak demand. Also the country possesses good potential for exploitation of biomass from oil palm wastes. This paper highlights the ways to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy in Malaysia. It will discuss the actions that need to be taken at the national level down to organisational and individual levels to accelerate the adoption of energy efficiency and renewable energy as the countrys main sources of energy. The task requires an integrated approach and not one that is fragmented to be successful.
