Abstract

Twenty small-scale dairy farms were selected for the survey for the survey of animal census milk production and nutritional condition from April 2002 to August 2003 in two villages located in Chitwan district Nepal. The milk yield MY of cattle that calved from March to May was significantly p0.01 lower than that of cattle that calved in the other seasons. The pasture shortage at the calving period might have affected the following lower milk production. In a village more than half of the cattle showed lower total protein TP and blood urea nitrogen BUN concentrations than the normal range in December 2002 and August 2003 which might have been due to malnutrition. Significant differences of MY body condition score BCS and liveweight LW were observed between the villages p0.01. Differences in management and breed structures between the villages might have caused the variation in the traits.
