Abstract
Seasonal feed availability and quality could influence the efficiency of small-holder dairying in the tropics. Development and establishment of local feed resources on-farm which uses both conventional and non-conventional resources such as legumes tree fodders and shrubs can result in more sustainable and profitable dairying. Research studies involving the on-farm use of cassava in the form of cassava chip and cassava hay showed promising results in improving milk productivity. Moreover cultivation of cassava by intercropping of food-feed legumes e.g. cowpea peanut phaseolus etc. can enhance soil fertility produce food for human consumption and crop residues as dairy feeds thus resulting in more lucrative dairying. Feed interventions for both roughages and home-made concentrate have been conducted through researchers-farmers participatory approach and details of these research findings are being presented in this paper.
