Abstract

The drop in consumer confidence due to a series of animal disease outbreaks has influenced consumption of animal products. A fear of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria is another potential factor for the confidence drop. The following research projects were initiated: 1 Detection of animal materials in feed to eradicate BSE2 Fermented liquid feeding to stop the drop in consumer confidence. The near infrared reflectance spectroscopy NIRS was shown to be able to distinguish meat and bone meal MBM material in formula feed or in fishmeal. The PCR method developed with the primer design on the basis of sequences of short interspersed repetitive element and long interspersed repetitive element could detect MBM in feed at a concentration of 0.01. The PCR method using primers for mitochondrial DNA applied for practical examination by authorized agencies in Japan was modified by adding an isolation procedure for bone particles. As bovine DNA derived from milk can be eliminated by this procedure this method is suitable for the selective detection of MBM in feed. It allows detection of the presence of bovine mtDNA in feed containing up to 0.1 of bovine MBM. The main purpose of the project on fermented liquid feeding is to develop a technology to maximize the use of co-products to increase self-sufficiency of feed as well as to decrease environmental pollution from food waste. This technology is expected to be an alternative to antimicrobial growth promoter. With the use of proper starter cultures for the preparation of fermented liquid feed after sterilization of materials probiotic lactic acid bacteria can be proliferated in these feed and certain acids such as lactic and acetic acids are produced. These acids can control harmful bacteria such as Salmonella and improve the microflora in digestive tract.
