Abstract

Japan imports more meat than any other country in the world. However to compete with low-price imported pork and thereby defined and develop domestic pig-related industries Japan has developed a line of pigs with high-meat quality and safe pork production systems. Results from a selection experiment for seven generations to develop an excellent line of Duroc breed in meat production and meat quality traits have been reported. Recently pork without reliance on antibiotic feed additives is demanded internationally for production. Therefore it is necessary to improve pigs' disease resistance. A pig-breeding program for the goal of disease resistance has begun. This report describes a selection experiment based on traditional breeding theory and on DNA marker information.
