Abstract

Eight Holstein dairy witj mean milk production of over 25 kg in a Latin-square design were allocated to four dietary treatments as follows1 basal diet tap water2 basal diet tap water liquid whey3 basal diet liquid whey4 basal diet a mixture of tap water and liquid whey at a ratio of 1:1. Tap water and liquid whey were provided ad libitum. every experimental period lasted three weeks with 7 days for data collection following an adaptation duration of 14 days. The dry matter intake for treatments 1 2 3 and 4 were 24.7 27.5 26.6 and 25.7 kg/day respectively. The average dry matter provided by the whey in treatments 2 3 and 4 was 4.6 8.8 and 4.2 kg/day respectively. Generally milk constituents did not differ significantly although milk fat content in treatments with with whey was lower. Therefore the utilization of liquid whey in the diet of dairy cattle not only helped to provide least-cost diets in the Iranian dairy industry but helped to address the potential pollution problems associated with liquid whey disposal as well.
