Abstract

A preliminary survey on the fauna species inhabiting Pondok Tanjung Forest Reserve PTFR were conducted from April to July 1999. PTFR is protected by the Department of Forestry and is categorised as a reserve forest. Mist-netting mainly for bats and birds field observations mainly for birds and large mammals trapping for small mammals and road killed record are the preferred methods. The survey showed a total of 11 mammals species from 7 families 43 species of birds from 23 families and 8 species of reptiles from 7 families. Two species of freshwater crabs namely Geosesarma cataracta and Parathelpusa maculata have also been recorded. Species composition found in the survey indicated that the animals were a mixture between species usually found in disturbed and undisturbed habitats. Based on these studies show that PTFR is suitable habitat and an refuge for wild animals.
