Abstract
The planning and design of modern cities is partially dictated by existing natural topography and resources by land use designations and planning controls and by the more ad hoc pursuit of human needs. Socio economic policies normally dictate that development processes be pursued and attainment is viewed as a positive outcome. This paper challenges the status quo in terms of meeting only the perceived economic needs of cities and identifies those benefits which are less tangible and discernable but nevertheless make a major contribution to the quality of life. It reviews a case study where the benefits to be derived from the provision of a linear park and by conserving specific buildings of architectural merit and areas of historic importance are identified. It further argues that the interaction of the built and natural environments is an important issue that should be adressed in the planning design and development of all cities both now and particularly in the future.
