Abstract

A total of 16 large scale fertiliser efficiency experiments established between 1983 and 1986 on eleven major soil types and on two palm age groups in different locations have been analysed and are presented in this paper. The results of nine of these experiments had been reported at the 1991 PORIM International Oil Palm Conference in Kuala Lumpur. The reporting of all 16 experiments at this conference presents a more complete picture of the interactions. The interactions were studies by testing in each experiment six factors namely Nitrogen and Potassium each at three levels and frequencies of application methods of application mulching with empty fruit bunches and placement of fronds each at two levels. The results showed that one needs to be cautious about the main effects when higher order two-way and three-way interactions. The common significant interactions involved Nitrogen x Potassium x mulching. The overall pattern of interactions could be more readily appreciated and subsequent financial calculations could also be readily undertaken by using some examples to illustrate these common two-way and three-way interactions. The new information derived from these significant interactions allowed exploitation of higher yields under different soils and ages of planting. The implication of higher yield in lowering cost of production is discussed.
