Abstract
A forest inventory and growth and yield database system was developed under the Malaysian-German project entitled Sustainable Forest Management and Conservation in Peninsular Malaysia.The database system represents an integrated programme package containing various modules/applications for the analysis of data obtained from five 5 Growth and Yield study areas 95 Growth Plots pre-felling and post-felling forest inventories and the medium-term Forest Management Inventory MIDAP.These modules produced and prepared datasets for simulation and are link to a Dipterocarp Forest Growth SimulatorDIPSIM which allows for their future growth projections.In addition DIPSIM can also carry out harversting simulations and in combination with growth simulations be used in Annual Allowable CutAAC determination.The various modules produce basic result tables which have the same format for all the different applications and therefore allows for direct comparison of results.These are stand and stock and species abundance tables.Under the project the pre-felling and Post-Felling forest inventory programmes have been reformulated using VISUAL dBASE and still provide the specific tables as produced under the current programmes written in FORTRAN. On completion the package will contain a mensurational database which would include standard height curves for the estimation of bole height from the measured diameter standard taper series functions which currently are based on the results of the five Growth and Yields study areas but will be complemented by increment data from the Growth Plots.At the moment the mensurational database is incorporated in each of the applications.The mensurational database needs continuous updating. This paper describes the various modules developed and presents suggestion for the maintenance and extension of the database.
