Abstract
The regeneration status of two logged-over forests i.e. Compartment 118 and Compartment 69 in Ulu Sedili Forest Reserve Johore which were logged under the Selective Management System SMS and the Malayan Uniform System MUS respectively were investigated. Compartment 118 was logged in August 2000 whereas Compartment 69 was logged in 1950s. Distribution of diameter classes of trees 1cm diameter at breast height dbh was determined in August 1999 for Compartment 118 before logging and March 2001 after logging. Whilst for compartment 69 the inventory was carried out in November 1999. The mean basal area after logging was 17.48m2 ha-1 a reduction of 51 in comparison to before logging 33.65m2 ha-1 in Compartment 118. A similar level of reduction 47 was observed for the mean density of trees in Compartment 118. However in the regenerating logged forest of Compartment 69 the mean basal area and mean density of trees were higher 21 and 122 respectively over Compartment 118 before logging. Eventhough trees 5cm dbh were rare in the regenerating forest 189 trees ha-1 logging has evidently favoured regeneration of trees with diameter 5cm dbh 590 trees ha-1. In Compartment 118 before logging 119 tree ha-1 for trees 5cm dbh and 231 trees ha-1 for trees 5cm dbh were observed.
