Abstract

Flowers of Dendrobium Caesar diploid 2N and tetraploid 4N were pulsed for 6 hours in 0.2 mM silver thiosulphate STS or 0.2 mM STS4 sucrose and then held in a solution of 200 ppm 8-hydroxyquinoline sulphate 8-HOS4 sucrose at 20Cwith 60-70 relative humidity. Distilled water as pulsing and holding solution served as the control. Vase life of Caesar2N flowers was not affected by the treatments. In contrast Caesar 4N flowers had increased vase life in response to the pulsing and holding solution treatments. Pulsing with STS alone was the most effective extending vase life by 12 days while the other treatments extended vase life by only 1.5-4.5 days more than that of the control 15 days. Absorption capacity and respiration rate did not vary much with treatment indicating that flower senescence and hence vase life was mainly regulated by ethylene which was apparently inhibited by pulsing with STS.
