Abstract

Gaharu agarwood eaglewood aloeswood - these are just a few of the names for the resinous fragrant and highly valuable heartwood produced by Aquilaria malaccensis and other species of the Indomalesian tree genus Aquilaria. The wealth of names for this dark and heavy wood reflects its widespread and varied use over thousands of years. In Sarawak the evidence of gaharu trade already existed during the Rajah Brooke era in the early 1930s but no scientific data on the conservation works of the plants. This paper reports on the framework of system approach encompassing geographical and ecological silviculture molecular and biotechnology economic socio-cultural/indigenous knowledge and legislation surrounding gaharu as one of the most outstanding non wood forest products NWFP in Sarawak. It concludes by throwing on the challenges ahead towards sustainable gaharu production in Sarawak.
