Abstract
Commercial forest plantation has been managed in Queenslands tropics and sub tropics for more than 70 years. The Queensland Department of Primary Industries- Forestry DPI Forestry maintains a fire management program which addresses the significant the fire risks to these plantations. Factors in the rural environment influencing fire risks include a a propensity for droughts and severefire weather patterns b fire prone native vegetation and c legislation regulating the use of fire. The main elements of DPI Forestrys fire management program are described. Fire management is fully integrated into plantation production activities. A strong emphasis is placed on fire prevention strategies consistent with comtemporary philosophy on the management of risk. In addition there are is rapid supression response to any fire outbreak that threatens plantation. DPI Forestrys reserach capability has made important contributions to the development of fire management practice. This capabilities is the deliveredby DPI Forestrys research arm the Queensland Forest Research Institute. It is advocated that in the development and enhancement of fire management strategies internal and external fire issues must be reviewed and assessed. Internal issues include the fire tolerance and habitat of the plantation species. External issues include a an appreciation of fire issues in the rural environment that may impact on plantations and b assessment of best practice fire management.
